He is spring to loose her from negligence. Light and darkness are both major metaphors throughout the story. Most of the storys setting is at night, enclosed in darkness. One example is when, during the scene of the hostility between Mr. Russell and Woody, Jackies mum walked out of the floodlamp light carrying her bag, turned the recession at the count porch steps and disappeared toward the olive trees that ran in rows back into the wheat.
